PHATOIL essential oils guide scent and usage 2026

PHATOIL is the essential oil range we stock alongside our red light devices. It comes in 100ml amber glass bottles with a glass dropper and a gift box, in nine single-note scents.

This guide covers what's actually in the range, how to pick a scent, and how many drops to use in each method — including the question we get asked most, which is how it fits around a red light session.

What PHATOIL actually is

Single-note essential oils, not blends. Each bottle is one plant extract, with no fillers, alcohol or synthetic fragrance added.

A few practical details that matter more than the marketing:

  • 100ml is a large bottle. Most retail essential oils are 10ml or 15ml. At 5–10 drops per diffuser session, a 100ml bottle lasts a long time.
  • Amber glass. Essential oils degrade in light. Clear or plastic bottles are a shortcut; amber glass isn't.
  • Glass dropper included. You need one — pouring straight from the bottle wastes oil and makes dosing guesswork.
  • Around a three-year shelf life unopened, stored away from heat and light. Citrus oils generally turn faster than woody ones once opened.

One honest note on shipping: PHATOIL stock ships from overseas, so allow 2–4 weeks for delivery. Our red light devices ship from within Australia — the oils are the exception.

The nine scents, and what people pick them for

LavenderWinding down in the eveningFloral, soft, herbal
SandalwoodMeditation, quiet focusWoody, creamy, earthy
VanillaA warm, comforting roomSweet, creamy, gourmand
Sweet OrangeLifting the mood of a spaceSweet, fruity, cheerful
LemonA bright, clean-smelling roomZesty, sharp, citrus
LemongrassA fresh, green noteCitrusy, grassy
PeppermintDaytime, desk hoursCool, minty, sharp
EucalyptusA fresh, open-feeling roomCamphoraceous, crisp
Tea TreeA clean, utilitarian scentMedicinal, woody

These are scent preferences and traditional aromatherapy associations, not health claims. Essential oils are a fragrance product — they're not a remedy for anything, and we don't present them as one.

If you're buying your first bottle: lavender if you want something for the evening, sweet orange if you want something the whole household will like, peppermint if you want something for daytime. Those three are the safest first picks.

If you're buying a gift: sandalwood and vanilla present the best — they're the least polarising of the woody and sweet notes, and the gift box does the rest.

Drop counts vary by method — diffuser, bath, massage blend and inhalation each call for a different amount

How to use them — the actual drop counts

This is the part most guides skip.

In an ultrasonic diffuser — 5 to 10 drops. Fill the water reservoir to the line first, then add oil. Start at 5 drops in a bedroom-sized room; go to 10 in a living room. More is not better, and over-dosing a small room is the most common mistake.

In the bath — 5 to 8 drops. Oil and water don't mix, so drops will float. Stir the water through as you add them, or mix the drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil or unscented bath base first so they disperse rather than sitting on the surface.

In a massage blend — always dilute. Never put undiluted essential oil on skin. Mix into a carrier oil (fractionated coconut, sweet almond, jojoba) — a common household ratio is a few drops per tablespoon of carrier. Patch-test on a small area first and leave it a day before using a new oil more widely.

Straight inhalation — 1 to 2 drops. On a tissue, or from the open bottle. No dilution needed since it isn't touching skin.

In a humidifier or room spray — a few drops. Check your humidifier's manual first; many aren't built for oils and the oil can damage the plastic.

In DIY projects — candles, soaps, bath bombs. The 100ml size is what makes this practical.

ultrasonic essential oil diffuser use and maintenance tips
Cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers keep the scent true to the bottle — empty, wipe and rinse regularly to keep them working well

Using PHATOIL with a diffuser

Our Alpha Premium Wooden Ultrasonic Diffuser and the Light Pine version are ultrasonic cool-mist units — they use vibration rather than heat, run up to 8+ hours, have multi-colour LED mood lighting and auto shut-off when the water runs out.

The practical difference between cool-mist and heated diffusers: heat can alter the scent as the oil warms. Cool-mist keeps it closer to how the oil smells in the bottle, and it doesn't leave a hot surface in a bedroom.

Two maintenance habits that keep a diffuser working:

  1. Empty and wipe it dry after each use. Oil residue builds up on the ultrasonic disc and output drops off.
  2. Rinse with a little white vinegar every couple of weeks, then rinse clean, especially in hard-water areas.

Setup video and a one-page PDF guide for the diffuser are on our product training hub.

Where it fits around a red light session

Plenty of people run a diffuser during a light session, and it's a reasonable pairing — a 15-minute session is 15 minutes of lying still, and a scent makes that easier to stick to. Consistency is what makes any at-home routine work.

Two things to keep straight, though:

  • The oil isn't doing anything to the light. These are two separate products that happen to suit the same quarter of an hour. Nobody should tell you the combination amplifies anything.
  • Don't put oil on the skin under a device. Diluted or not, keep the mat, belt or mask surface clean and dry. Oils can mark the surface material and make it harder to wipe down.

For a full routine rather than just the pairing, we've written that up separately: aromatherapy and red light therapy at home and a simple evening red light routine.

Safety basics

Standard essential oil handling, none of it specific to PHATOIL:

  • Keep away from children and pets. Several common oils — tea tree and eucalyptus among them — are not safe around cats and dogs.
  • Never swallow essential oils.
  • Never apply undiluted to skin. Patch-test anything new.
  • Keep away from eyes.
  • If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a diagnosed skin or respiratory condition, check with your GP before using essential oils regularly.
  • Ventilate. Diffusing in a sealed room for hours isn't better than diffusing in a normal one.

Bundles

If you're buying a device anyway, the bundles work out cheaper than buying separately: Belt + PHATOIL and Mat + PHATOIL. Oils on their own are on the PHATOIL Oils page.

FAQ

What is PHATOIL? PHATOIL is a range of single-note essential oils sold in 100ml amber glass bottles with a glass dropper and gift box. Each bottle is one plant extract with no fillers, alcohol or synthetic fragrance added.

How many drops of essential oil go in a diffuser? Five to ten drops into a filled water reservoir. Start at five for a bedroom-sized room and go higher only if the scent is too faint.

Can I put PHATOIL directly on my skin? No. Essential oils should always be diluted in a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut, sweet almond or jojoba before skin contact, and patch-tested first.

Which PHATOIL scent should I start with? Lavender for evenings, sweet orange as a crowd-pleaser, peppermint for daytime. Sandalwood and vanilla are the better gift choices.

How long do PHATOIL oils last? Around three years unopened, stored away from heat and direct light. Once opened, citrus oils generally turn faster than woody ones.

Can I use essential oils during a red light session? You can run a diffuser in the room. Don't apply oil to your skin under a mat, belt or mask — it can mark the device surface. The oil and the light are separate products; neither changes what the other does.

How long does PHATOIL take to arrive? PHATOIL stock ships from overseas, so allow 2–4 weeks. Alpha's red light devices ship from within Australia.
